Translation As a Globalization Tool
Translation has become an indispensable tool for the globalization process, in keeping with the continuous development of the communication means which allow businesses to go worldwide more easily, people to speak different languages while travelling, meeting and talking over the internet or face to face. Globalization is shrinking the world and in this process translation is a key tool because it manages to bring cultures closer together.
How can translation do that? First of all it offers the works of great writers like Tolstoy or Zola to people who don't speak French or Russian. Their works become more available to a larger public. This cultural side isn't limited to books, since plays or opera concerts can also be adapted to the audience's language. If you go to a theatre in Tokyo you can be stunned when you see a Japanese Hamlet.
Apart from its role in cultural globalization, translation is an important component in worldwide business. Without it, international companies could hardly get new clients on the international market, simply because their message would not be fully understood. To make sure that this doesn't happen, international businesses have to approach potential clients in their mother tongue. That's why we can see advertising campaigns for a German car manufacturer, for example, that respect the same patterns worldwide with only few adjustments, depending on the country where they are trying to promote their products or services. One of these adjustments that are of great importance is the language.
Translation is also indispensable in politics, especially when it comes to diplomacy or international institutions. Take for example the European Union that has a very important translation department meant to provide quality translation services for the European Parliament and the European Commission in all of the 24 European languages.
Translation helps the globalization process to break the language barrier in order to make the cultural, economical and political communication more available to a larger public.
